From turquoise spring-fed creeks north of Payson to the iconic red-rock slides near Sedona, these are the best places to cool off this summer.

Fossil Creek — Camp Verde Area (2 Hours North)

Fossil Creek is genuinely one of the most beautiful places in Arizona. The creek flows from a massive natural spring at a constant 70 degrees year-round, creating crystal-clear pools surrounded by lush riparian vegetation in the middle of the desert. The waterfall pool at the base of Fossil Falls is the signature swimming spot, and the creek above the falls offers additional pools for exploration. The big catch: Fossil Creek requires a permit from May through September due to its popularity. Permits are released online through Recreation.gov on a rolling basis. The hike down to the swimming area is steep and short — under a mile round trip — but the descent requires navigating slick rocks and occasional chain-assist sections. Closed-toe shoes are essential.
