Golf in the Valley of the Sun

Golf in the Valley of the Sun

More than 200 courses, 300+ days of sun, and TPC Scottsdale's roaring 16th — greater Phoenix is a golf capital.

Metro Phoenix is one of America's great golf destinations, with well over 200 courses across the Valley — from championship desert-target layouts to affordable municipal tracks. The West Valley alone has dozens of options around Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, and Goodyear.

The desert-golf style is distinctive: emerald fairways carved through raw Sonoran desert, forced carries over washes, and saguaro-lined holes with mountain backdrops. TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course hosts the WM Phoenix Open, whose par-3 16th 'Coliseum' is the rowdiest hole in golf.

Peak season is winter into spring (November-April), when snowbirds flood in and the weather is flawless. The trade-off is the highest green fees of the year; summer brings 100°F-plus heat and dramatically discounted twilight rates.

Common questions

When is the best time to play?

October through April for ideal weather. In summer, play early-morning or twilight to beat the heat — and to catch steep discounts on otherwise pricey resort courses.

What are the must-play courses?

TPC Scottsdale (Stadium), Troon North, We-Ko-Pa, and Grayhawk are the marquee names. For a great-value round, the Wigwam in Litchfield Park and municipal courses around the West Valley are excellent.

How much will I pay?

Resort and championship courses can run $150-300+ in peak season; municipal and twilight rounds can be $40-75. Summer green fees drop sharply — sometimes by more than half.

Can I watch the WM Phoenix Open?

Yes — it's held at TPC Scottsdale, usually in early February, and is the best-attended event on the PGA Tour. The party scene around the par-3 16th hole is legendary; buy tickets and arrange a shuttle well in advance.
