Bisbee AZ Day Trip — Guide to a Historic Mining Town
Bisbee: Arizona's Most Unexpected Town
Bisbee sits at 5,300 feet in the Mule Mountains, about 90 miles southeast of Tucson and around 3 hours from Phoenix. It is typically paired with a Tombstone stop — and the two towns make a genuinely excellent full-day itinerary. But Bisbee earns its own dedicated visit. What was once one of the largest copper-producing cities in the world reinvented itself as an artist colony, and the result is one of the most atmospheric and strange-in-the-best-way towns in the entire Southwest. Add it to your Arizona day trip list.
Queen Mine Tour
The Queen Mine Tour is the must-do anchor of any Bisbee visit. You board an underground mine train, strap on a hard hat and headlamp, and ride deep into the mountain while a retired miner walks you through 100 years of copper extraction history. It is genuinely fascinating — the scale of the operation, the conditions the workers endured, and the engineering involved are all covered without being dry. Tours run several times daily and cost around $15 for adults. Book ahead on weekends.
The Lavender Pit
Just outside town, the Lavender Pit is a massive open-pit copper mine that operated from 1950 to 1974. A free overlook gives you a dramatic view into the multi-terraced pit, which stretches 300 feet deep and nearly a mile wide. The purple-tinted walls gave it the name. It is a quick but striking stop that puts the scale of Bisbee's mining history into perspective.
Old Bisbee and Brewery Gulch
Bisbee's historic district is built into hillsides so steep that some neighborhoods are only accessible by staircases. Wandering the streets is itself an activity — Victorian homes painted in wild colors, art galleries tucked into former mine offices, and boutique shops in century-old storefronts. Brewery Gulch was once the rowdiest street in the territory, lined with over 50 saloons. Today it hosts a handful of bars and the Bisbee Breakfast Club, which is consistently ranked among the best breakfast spots in southern Arizona with creative omelets and house-made pastries.
Art Galleries and the Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum
The Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum, housed in the original Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company office, is a Smithsonian affiliate with excellent exhibits on the town's multicultural labor history. It is well worth an hour. The surrounding blocks are dense with galleries — Belleza Fine Art and Old Bisbee Art Gallery are two of the longer-running venues showing work by local and regional artists.
Where to Eat
Cafe Roka on Main Street is Bisbee's most celebrated dinner restaurant, with an Italian-influenced menu and a wine list that would feel at home in Scottsdale. For something more casual, Santiago's Mexican Restaurant on Subway Street has served generous plates of Sonoran-style Mexican food to locals for years. Pair your day with a stop in Tucson on the drive back — it is a natural midpoint and adds another dimension to the southern Arizona experience. Check upcoming weekend events for Bisbee festivals before you go.
