Cave Creek AZ Day Trip — Wild West North of Phoenix
Cave Creek: The Valley's Wild West Backyard
Cave Creek is one of those places that Phoenix residents often overlook because it is so close. Just 35 minutes north of downtown Phoenix on Cave Creek Road, this small town of about 5,000 people has managed to hold onto its frontier identity in a way that Scottsdale and the rest of the metro gave up decades ago. Wooden boardwalks, hitching posts, live country music spilling out of saloon doors on a Tuesday afternoon — Cave Creek is the real deal. It makes for one of the most satisfying half-day or full-day escapes from the West Valley. Browse the Cave Creek neighborhood guide for more.
Harold's Cave Creek Corral
Harold's Cave Creek Corral is the anchor of Cave Creek's social scene and has been since 1935. The sprawling saloon and steakhouse hosts live country and western music most nights, has an outdoor stage for bigger acts, and serves cold beer by the bucket alongside mesquite-grilled steaks and burgers. On a Saturday afternoon the patio fills up with a genuine cross-section of Arizona — bikers, cowboys, hikers, and families all sharing picnic tables. It is exactly as fun as it sounds.
Frontier Town
Frontier Town on Cave Creek Road is a small shopping and dining complex built entirely in frontier style — wooden storefronts, covered walkways, and a water tower at the center. It houses several boutiques, a few restaurants, and the Buffalo Chip Saloon and Steakhouse, another Cave Creek institution known for its mechanical bull, country bands, and massive patio. The two-step dance floor on weekends draws serious dancers from across the Valley.
Hiking in the Sonoran Preserve
Cave Creek sits at the edge of some of the best desert hiking in the Phoenix area. The Cave Creek Regional Park offers over 20 miles of trails through classic Sonoran Desert — saguaro forests, rocky ridges, and seasonal creek crossings. The Go John Trail is a popular 6-mile loop with great views and manageable elevation for most fitness levels. For more trail ideas around the region, check the best hikes near Phoenix guide. Early morning is best — parking fills fast on cool winter weekends.
Horseback Riding and Desert Jeep Tours
Several outfitters operate out of Cave Creek offering guided horseback rides into the surrounding desert. Spur Cross Stables runs half-day rides through Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, one of the most scenic protected parcels in the region. Desert jeep tours are another option for those who want to cover more ground without the saddle soreness.
Where to Eat
Beyond the saloons, Tonto Bar and Grill on Tom Darlington Drive is the most polished dining option in Cave Creek, with a patio overlooking the desert and a menu that runs from elevated pub food to proper steaks. El Encanto on Cave Creek Road is beloved for its Sonoran Mexican food and outdoor seating shaded by mesquite trees. Cave Creek pairs naturally with a stop at Scottsdale on the way back if you want to extend the evening. Check this weekend's events for live music schedules before heading up.
