Free Things to Do in Phoenix
Hike the desert (the city's best free attraction)
Phoenix is one of the only major U.S. cities with serious mountains inside its limits, and hiking them is completely free.
- Camelback Mountain: The most famous hike in the city, Camelback offers two challenging summit trails with sweeping views of the entire Valley. It is steep, rocky, and not for beginners, but it is iconic. Go early, bring water, and avoid the midday heat.
- South Mountain Park and Preserve: One of the largest municipal parks in the country, South Mountain has miles of trails for every skill level plus a scenic drive to Dobbins Lookout for a panoramic view of Phoenix. Entry is free.
- Piestewa Peak: A popular, accessible summit hike in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, closer to central Phoenix than Camelback.

First Fridays art walk
On the first Friday of every month, the downtown Phoenix arts district hosts one of the largest self-guided art walks in the country. Galleries, studios, and pop-up spaces along Roosevelt Row and surrounding streets open their doors, and the area fills with food trucks, live music, and local makers. It is free to wander, and it is the single best way to take the pulse of the city's creative scene. Plan around it from the downtown Phoenix page.
Parks, gardens, and green space
Beyond the mountain preserves, Phoenix has a deep bench of parks:
- Encanto Park: A historic central park with lagoons, big shade trees, and paddle boats, a green oasis near downtown.
- Tempe Town Lake and the surrounding paths: Just east of Phoenix, the lake's loop is a popular free spot for walking, running, and watching the sunset over the water.
- Papago Park: Home to the photogenic Hole-in-the-Rock formation and easy trails, with free entry to the park itself.
Museum free days and always-free spots
Several of the Valley's cultural institutions offer free admission days or evenings on a recurring basis, often tied to the first of the month or to weekly community nights. Policies change, so it is always worth checking a museum's site before you go. A few categories to look for:
- Art museums that run free community evenings, often paired with live music.
- Cultural and heritage centers that keep admission free or donation-based.
- Public art across downtown, which is free to see any time, including murals along Roosevelt Row.
A good rule of thumb: check a museum's website before you visit for current free-day policies, and consider lining up a free evening with a First Friday or a weekend event to make a full outing of it.
Sunsets, stargazing, and the desert at night
Some of the best free experiences in Phoenix happen at the edges of the day. The desert sunset, with the sky turning orange and pink behind the mountains and saguaros, is a nightly free show. Dobbins Lookout at South Mountain, Papago Park, and the Tempe Town Lake paths are all classic, no-cost spots to watch it. In the cooler months, an evening walk after the heat breaks is one of the most pleasant ways to experience the city. And because much of Arizona takes its dark skies seriously, a short drive out of the city lights opens up genuinely impressive stargazing, no ticket required.
Free events all year
Phoenix runs a steady calendar of free festivals, outdoor concerts, holiday light displays, and community celebrations, heaviest in the cooler months from October through April. The lineup changes constantly, so the best approach is to check what is on during your visit rather than rely on a fixed list.
A note on timing
The free outdoor stuff, the hikes, the parks, the art walks, is at its best from November through April. In the summer, shift outdoor activities to early morning or evening and lean on indoor options during the heat of the day. The monsoon season in July and August brings dramatic afternoon storms worth watching from a safe spot.
