Step-by-step

1

Both partners go to a county Clerk of the Superior Court

Arizona issues marriage licenses through the Clerk of the Superior Court in any of the 15 counties — a license from any county is valid statewide. Maricopa County (Phoenix) and Pima County (Tucson) offer online pre-application; both partners still appear together in person to finalize.

2

Pay the license fee

Paid at the clerk's office (or online where offered). Card or cash depending on the county. This is a flat fee — no separate ceremony surcharge.

3

Both partners appear together

Both partners must appear at the clerk's office together to sign. No appointment is required at most offices, but check the county — Maricopa and Pima can be busy.

4

Bring ID

Government-issued photo ID for both partners. Arizona does not require proof of divorce for prior marriages, no witnesses are needed to obtain the license, and no blood test is required.

5

License has no expiration

An Arizona marriage license does not expire — there's no 30-day clock. Once issued, you can use it whenever the wedding happens. There is also no waiting period; you can marry the same day.

6

After the ceremony — officiant returns the license

Your officiant signs the completed license and returns it to the issuing Clerk of the Superior Court for recording. Order certified copies from the clerk if you need them for name changes.

Common gotchas

  • No residency requirement — you don't have to live in Arizona to marry here.
  • No waiting period — you can marry the same day the license is issued.
  • Minimum age is 18 (16-17 needs parental consent + the partner within three years of age).
  • Same-sex marriage is legal statewide — same license, same fee.
  • The license has no expiration date in Arizona — there's no clock once it's issued.
  • Out-of-state couples: take your certified copy home and update your state's records separately (Social Security, DMV, etc.).
