ASU Sun Devils Game Day Guide — Tempe
Game Day in Tempe Is More Than Just Football
An ASU Sun Devils game day in Tempe is one of the best full-day experiences in Arizona sports. Mountain America Stadium (formerly Sun Devil Stadium) sits in a dramatic natural bowl carved into the Tempe Butte, giving it one of the most distinctive settings in college football. But the real game-day culture spills off campus and down Mill Avenue, where the bars, restaurants, and energy build from noon onward regardless of kickoff time.
Getting There: Parking and Light Rail
Tempe is one of the easiest Valley venues to reach without a car. The Valley Metro Light Rail runs along Apache Boulevard with stops close to the ASU campus — the Tempe Transportation Center and Rural/University stops both put you a 10-minute walk from the stadium gates. This is the recommended option for anyone coming from Phoenix, Mesa, or Chandler.
If you drive, campus lots open several hours before kickoff. Permit lots are sold through ASU, and general public lots fill quickly for marquee games. Arrive at least two hours early for big home matchups to secure a spot without stress.
Mill Avenue: The Pregame Hub
Mill Avenue runs directly from the edge of campus into the heart of Tempe and serves as the unofficial pregame and postgame corridor for every Sun Devils home game. The strip is walkable, lined with bars and restaurants, and goes from lively to packed on big game days.
- Yard House at Arizona Mills — A reliable anchor for large groups, with enough screens and seating to handle game-day crowds. The beer selection is one of the best in the area.
- Four Peaks Brewing — Founded in Tempe and still headquartered here, Four Peaks is the unofficial hometown brewery of ASU game days. The taproom on 8th Street is a must-visit before or after any home game. The Kilt Lifter Scottish-style ale is the go-to order.
- Culinary Dropout — On the south end of Mill Avenue, Culinary Dropout fills up fast on football Saturdays. Grab the pretzel with beer-cheese sauce and a craft cocktail if you want a step up from bar food.
Tailgating on Campus
ASU allows tailgating in designated lots around Mountain America Stadium starting hours before kickoff. The atmosphere on the Butte side of the stadium is particularly strong for night games when the lights come on and the crowd builds. Bring a canopy — Arizona sun in September is not forgiving, even at 7 p.m.
Inside the Stadium
Mountain America Stadium holds around 53,000 fans in its current configuration after a recent renovation that modernized the lower bowl. The sightlines are excellent throughout, and the natural amphitheater setting amplifies crowd noise in a way that few college football venues match.
- Clear bag policy is in effect — plan accordingly at the gate.
- The stadium is cashless at all concession stands.
- Student sections fill early and stay loud — sitting adjacent to the student section is a good move for atmosphere on big game days.
