Things to Do in Peoria AZ: A Local Guide

ZonaHaps|June 7, 2026

Peoria is one of the fastest-growing cities in the West Valley, and it has developed a genuine identity over the past decade that goes well beyond its suburban origins. It is the home of the Peoria Sports Complex — one of the most fan-friendly Cactus League venues in Arizona — and the gateway to Lake Pleasant Regional Park, the Valley's best day-trip water destination. Add a growing independent dining scene in the P83 district and easy access to the White Tank and Bradshaw mountain foothills, and Peoria makes a strong case as a West Valley base.

Peoria Sports Complex

The Peoria Sports Complex at 16101 N 83rd Ave is the city's anchor event venue. From late February through March, it hosts the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners for Cactus League spring training, and it consistently ranks among the most beloved spring-training venues in baseball. The grass berm in left field is one of the best in the league, and the surrounding practice complex gives fans access to both organizations during morning workouts. See the full Peoria Sports Complex guide for everything you need to plan a visit.

Lake Pleasant Regional Park

Lake Pleasant is the real gem. Located about 20 minutes northwest of the sports complex on Lake Pleasant Road, the park encompasses 23,000 acres of Sonoran Desert around a large reservoir. The main draws are boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, hiking the desert shoreline trails, and wildlife watching — bald eagles winter here regularly, and the lakeside sunsets are genuine. The lake has launch ramps, a full-service marina, and campgrounds that fill up fast on winter and spring weekends.

For visitors combining a Cactus League trip with outdoor time, Lake Pleasant in the morning followed by a Peoria Sports Complex afternoon game is one of the best days the West Valley offers. The two are a 20-minute drive apart.

The P83 district

P83 is Peoria's entertainment and dining corridor, centered around 83rd Avenue and Bell Road. It is a mixed-use district with restaurants, breweries, entertainment venues, and the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts. The quality of the restaurant and bar options here has improved significantly in recent years, and it now functions as a genuine local dining destination rather than just a suburban strip. During spring training, P83 is where the post-game crowd gravitates after Peoria Sports Complex games.

Outdoor recreation

Beyond Lake Pleasant, Peoria has strong trail access. Sunrise Mountain Preserve on the east side of the city has multiple trails with good desert views and elevation gain — it is a better workout than the valley-floor parks and draws a dedicated local hiking crowd. The Rio Vista Recreation Area along the New River has paved paths and is good for casual walking and biking.

Getting around and staying in Peoria

Peoria sits on the 101 and 303 freeways, which puts it within 25 minutes of most of the West Valley and 30 minutes from Sky Harbor. The hotel corridor along 83rd and 91st avenues near the sports complex is the natural base for a Cactus League trip, and rates here are consistently lower than Scottsdale and downtown Phoenix while keeping you close to all four West Valley stadiums.
