Cottonwood

The hub of the Verde Valley wine trail — a walkable Old Town of tasting rooms, ancient ruins nearby, and a scenic railroad just up the road.

About Cottonwood

Cottonwood sits in the heart of the Verde Valley in central Arizona, a once-modest town that has reinvented itself as the hub of the region's wine country. Its compact Old Town district has become a destination in its own right, lined with tasting rooms, restaurants, boutiques, and historic storefronts along Main Street. The setting along the Verde River, with red-rock country and Jerome's hillside visible nearby, gives it a scenic, laid-back appeal. It makes a relaxed and central base for exploring the wider Verde Valley.

Wine is the town's signature draw, and Old Town Cottonwood is the walkable center of the Verde Valley wine trail, with numerous tasting rooms within strolling distance of one another. The area's vineyards and wineries have earned the Verde Valley a growing reputation as one of Arizona's two main wine regions. Beyond the glass, Old Town hosts festivals, live music, and seasonal events that keep its streets lively. The concentration of tasting rooms makes it an easy, car-free afternoon of sampling.

History and the outdoors are close at hand. Just outside town, Tuzigoot National Monument preserves a hilltop pueblo ruin built by the Sinagua people, and Dead Horse Ranch State Park offers riverside trails, lagoons, and birding along the Verde River. The nearby Verde Canyon Railroad, departing from Clarkdale just up the road, runs a celebrated scenic train ride through a remote red-rock canyon. Together they surround Cottonwood with ancient history, river recreation, and one of the state's best train excursions.

At a middle elevation, Cottonwood is milder than the desert but warmer than the high country, with hot summers and gentle winters that make it comfortable much of the year. Spring and fall are ideal for combining wine tasting with river trails and the scenic railroad. A great day here might pair a morning at Tuzigoot or Dead Horse Ranch with an afternoon of tasting-room hopping in Old Town, or a ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad. The wine, the ruins, and the river are the heart of the visit.
