Jerome
A former copper boomtown clinging to Cleopatra Hill — art galleries, wineries, hairpin streets, sweeping Verde Valley views, and famously haunted history.
About Jerome
Jerome is a tiny former mining town perched dramatically on the steep side of Cleopatra Hill, high above the Verde Valley in central Arizona. In its early-twentieth-century heyday it was a booming copper-mining center and one of the larger towns in the territory, before the mines closed and the population collapsed. For a time it was nearly abandoned, earning a reputation as a ghost town, before artists and shopkeepers revived it. Today its precarious hillside streets and historic buildings make it one of Arizona's most atmospheric small towns.
The mining history is everywhere, from the old headframes and the Jerome State Historic Park at the Douglas Mansion to stories of buildings that literally slid downhill over the years. That past, combined with its near-abandonment, has given Jerome a widely told reputation as a haunted town, and ghost-themed tours and lore are a popular draw. The steep, winding streets and stacked architecture make simply walking around feel like stepping into another era. The dramatic setting and history are inseparable from the experience.
Modern Jerome thrives as an arts-and-wine destination, packed into a few blocks with galleries, studios, eclectic shops, restaurants, and tasting rooms. It sits within the Verde Valley wine country, and several wineries and tasting rooms make it a favorite stop on the regional wine trail. The town's perch also delivers sweeping panoramic views across the valley toward the red rocks near Sedona. Art, wine, history, and the view together give this small town an outsized appeal.
Jerome's mile-high elevation keeps it cooler than the desert, with mild summers and chilly winters, making it a comfortable day trip much of the year. Spring and fall are especially pleasant for walking the steep streets and sitting on view-facing patios. A great day here might combine a stroll through the galleries and historic district, a tasting at a Verde Valley winery, and lunch with a panoramic valley view, perhaps capped by a ghost-themed tour. The hillside setting and artsy, haunted character are the draws.
