Glendale
The West Valley's sports-and-entertainment capital — NFL Sundays, hockey nights, big concerts, and a historic downtown full of antique shops.
About Glendale
Glendale is the anchor of the West Valley and, for a lot of metro Phoenix, the reason to drive west on a weekend. The Sports & Entertainment District around Loop 101 packs State Farm Stadium (home of the Arizona Cardinals and a regular Super Bowl host), Desert Diamond Arena, and the open-air shops and restaurants of Westgate into a single walkable cluster. On a game day or a concert night, the whole district lights up.
Drive a few minutes south and the mood flips. Historic Downtown Glendale — centered on Murphy Park and Catlin Court — is a grid of 1920s bungalows turned into antique shops, tea rooms, and family-run restaurants. It's been called Arizona's antique capital, and the Glendale Glitters holiday light display (downtown, winter season) draws crowds from across the Valley.
Glendale is also a food town that doesn't get enough credit. The stretch along 59th Avenue and the older downtown core hide some of the best birria, Sonoran hot dogs, and family taquerias in the West Valley. Spring brings the Glendale Chocolate Affaire; fall and winter bring the festival season that fills Murphy Park most weekends.
Summer is hot — plan for triple digits June through September and aim activities at mornings, evenings, and the indoor arena calendar. The rest of the year, Glendale is one of the easiest places in the Valley to spend a full day: brunch downtown, antiques in Catlin Court, then a Cardinals or Coyotes-era arena event after dark.
