Fountain Hills

Home of one of the world's tallest fountains, a celebrated arts-and-crafts fair, and dark night skies on the edge of the McDowell Mountains.

About Fountain Hills

Fountain Hills is a master-planned community tucked against the McDowell Mountains northeast of Scottsdale, and it is named for exactly what you think. At its center, a giant fountain in a man-made lake shoots a plume of water hundreds of feet into the air on a regular schedule, and for years it ranked among the tallest fountains in the world. The fountain runs for about fifteen minutes at the top of each hour during the day, and watching it from the surrounding Fountain Park is the town's signature ritual. The plume is visible from miles around and has become the community's defining landmark.

Twice a year, in late fall and again in spring, the town hosts the Fountain Hills Festival of Arts and Crafts, a large juried fair that draws artists and crowds from across the Southwest. It is one of the region's better-known art events and turns the area around the fountain and downtown into a sprawling open-air market. The town has a strong arts identity year-round, with public sculpture, galleries, and a community theater scene. The festivals are the calendar's high points and a big reason visitors make the drive.

Beyond the fountain, the town is surrounded by Sonoran Desert open space, including the adjacent McDowell Mountain Regional Park and the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, with trails for hiking and mountain biking. Fountain Hills is also an officially recognized International Dark Sky Community, meaning it limits light pollution so residents and visitors can actually see the stars. Stargazing events and a dark-sky discovery center lean into that distinction. The combination of desert trails by day and clear skies by night gives the town an outdoorsy, low-key character.

Summers are hot like the rest of the Valley, with triple-digit highs common from June into September, so the festivals and outdoor events cluster in the cooler months. The best window runs roughly October through April, when the fountain, the parks, and the art fairs are all comfortable to enjoy. A great day here might mean a morning hike in the McDowell preserve, lunch downtown, and an afternoon timed to catch the fountain on the hour, capped by stargazing after dark. The dark-sky setting makes evenings here a draw all their own.
