Payson

Payson sits in the heart of Arizona's Rim Country, a forested town at around 5,000 feet roughly between Phoenix and the high country to the north. It is the gateway to the Mogollon Rim, the dramatic escarpment that marks the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau, and it has long been a favorite cool-weather escape for Valley residents fleeing summer heat. Surrounded by the Tonto National Forest and ponderosa pines, it blends small-town life with serious outdoor recreation. The town has deep Western and pioneer roots.

Those roots show in its rodeo heritage. Payson bills its rodeo as the World's Oldest Continuous Rodeo, a tradition dating back generations and a centerpiece of the local calendar, typically held in summer. The town also celebrates its frontier history through community events and ties to Western writer Zane Grey, who built a cabin nearby in the Rim Country he made famous in his novels.

Outdoor recreation is the main attraction. The Mogollon Rim offers spectacular overlooks, hiking, and scenic drives, while a string of cool forest lakes and creeks draws anglers and campers through the warm months. The surrounding Tonto National Forest provides endless trails, and the East Verde River and nearby streams are popular for fishing and wading. Downtown Payson offers casual dining, breweries, and shops to round out a mountain visit.

Payson's elevation gives it comfortable summers — its biggest draw, when Phoenix bakes — along with crisp falls and the occasional snowy winter. Late spring through fall is prime time for the lakes, trails, and rodeo. A satisfying day combines a drive to a Mogollon Rim overlook, an afternoon fishing or hiking in the Tonto forest, and a meal in town, with the summer rodeo as a seasonal highlight.
