Surprise
Spring-training baseball, a tennis-and-aquatics complex, and one of the fastest-growing family towns on the far west side.
About Surprise
Surprise sits at the northwest edge of metro Phoenix and has grown from a tiny farm town into one of the West Valley's biggest family communities. The name is the local conversation-starter — by one well-worn story it was named because the founder would be surprised if the place ever amounted to much. It did.
The Surprise Recreation Campus is the civic heart: Surprise Stadium is the spring-training home of the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals, and the surrounding complex includes a regional library, a big aquatic center, and one of the best public tennis facilities in the state. February and March bring Cactus League crowds; the rest of the year the campus runs on youth sports and community events.
Surprise's festival calendar leans family-and-community: holiday tree lightings, food-truck nights, and the Surprise Party / Fiesta Grande-style events that fill the campus lawns. The retirement communities of Sun City Grand to the north keep daytime golf and pickleball busy, while younger families fill the newer subdivisions south toward Waddell.
It's a town for easy weekends rather than headline attractions: a morning at the aquatic center, a ballgame in spring, a farmers market, and an early dinner. Summer is hot like everywhere out here — mornings and evenings are your friends from June through September.
