Sun City West
The West Valley's flagship active-adult community — championship golf, the R.H. Johnson rec center, and a packed calendar of clubs and shows.
About Sun City West
Sun City West is one of the original Del Webb retirement communities, built just northwest of the first Sun City and opened in the late 1970s. It was designed from the ground up as an age-restricted active-adult town, and that identity still defines it. Residents come for the warm winters, the low-maintenance living, and a lifestyle organized almost entirely around recreation. The community is unincorporated but tightly run by its own recreation and property associations.
Golf is the heartbeat of the place. Sun City West is home to several full courses, including Hillcrest, Pebblebrook, Echo Mesa, Trail Ridge, Deer Valley, and Grandview, giving residents some of the densest golf access anywhere in metro Phoenix. Between rounds, the social fabric runs on hundreds of chartered clubs covering everything from lapidary and woodworking to ham radio, pickleball, and theater. The R.H. Johnson Recreation Center anchors it all with pools, fitness rooms, a library, and meeting space.
Culture here leans toward live performance and hobby craftsmanship. The Stardust Theatre hosts community productions and touring acts, while the Sundome and surrounding venues have long drawn entertainment for the 55-plus crowd. Dining clusters around the rec centers and along Meeker and Stardust boulevards, with casual American spots, cafes, and golf-club grills doing steady business. Seasonal craft fairs and club showcases fill the social calendar through the cooler months.
Like most of the West Valley, Sun City West is busiest from roughly October through April, when snowbirds return and the weather is ideal for golf and outdoor swims. Summers are quiet and very hot, so mornings are the time to be outside. A good day here means an early tee time or a fitness class, lunch at a club grill, an afternoon at the pool or a hobby shop, and an evening community show or concert.
